Big Mullet Key is one of three mangrove islands 9 miles northwest of Key West within the Key West National Wildlife Refuge. A 300-foot no-motor zone surrounds Big Mullet Key, with a 300-foot no entry zone around the nearby Cottrell and Little Mullet Keys to protect wildlife. The island harbors nesting great white herons, a variety of other wading birds, and mangrove terrapins (Malaclemys terrapin rhizophorarum). This management area is small in size, encompassing just 32 acres.
